Erectile dysfunction is often framed as a purely vascular or pharmacologic issue, yet growing evidence highlights the complex interplay between pelvic floor anatomy, neurology, physiology, and psychosocial factors in erectile function. This course is designed for pelvic health physical therapists seeking a deeper, clinically relevant understanding of erectile dysfunction from a rehabilitation perspective.
Participants will review the functional anatomy of the male pelvis and penis, the neurovascular mechanisms underlying erection, and the influence of psychological and contextual factors on erectile performance. The course will then translate this foundational science into practical assessment and treatment strategies, with an emphasis on pelvic floor physical therapy interventions that can meaningfully impact outcomes for men with erectile dysfunction.
Participants of this class will be able to:
- Describe the relevant anatomy of the male pelvis and penis as it relates to erectile function, including muscular, fascial, and vascular components.
- Explain the neurological and physiological mechanisms involved in erection, including central and peripheral contributions and autonomic nervous system regulation.
- Recognize the role of psychological, emotional, and contextual factors in erectile dysfunction and how these interact with physical impairments.
- Identify key clinical findings during evaluation that may contribute to erectile dysfunction in male patients.
- Apply evidence-informed pelvic floor physical therapy techniques and treatment strategies to address erectile dysfunction in a clinical setting.
