This course is a foundational course designed to help pelvic health therapists confidently work with runners by understanding basic running gait mechanics, common running-related injuries, and run-specific treatment considerations.
Pelvic health clinicians frequently treat runners with urinary symptoms, pelvic pain, hip pain, hamstring issues, or low back pain, yet many lack formal education in running biomechanics and gait analysis. This course bridges that gap by introducing the essentials of running gait, key movement patterns, and how training load and mechanics influence symptoms.
Participants will review common running injuries seen in pelvic health practice, learn simple strategies for observing and interpreting running gait, and discuss basic footwear considerations. The course will also introduce run-specific strengthening and movement exercises that complement pelvic health care.
Finally, this course emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, helping clinicians understand when to continue managing a runner within pelvic health care and when to refer to or collaborate with a running-specific physical therapist for optimal outcomes.
Participants of this class will be able to:
- Describe the basic phases of running gait and identify key biomechanical factors relevant to pelvic health presentations.
- Identify common running-related injuries and symptoms encountered in pelvic health practice and understand how gait mechanics and training load may contribute.
- Perform a basic running gait observation or video analysis to identify movement patterns that may influence pelvic floor or lumbopelvic symptoms.
- Apply foundational footwear and run-specific exercise principles to support runners within pelvic health treatment.
- Determine when referral to or collaboration with a running-specific physical therapist is appropriate, and describe effective strategies for interdisciplinary care.
